Student Training

When you bring your vehicle to a Referee, you are also helping students who are training for their future careers in the automotive industry.

The Smog Check Referee program has helped support the training of hundreds of future smog technicians through the Student Technician Training Program (STTP).

This paid supplemental training program was developed with guidance from the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) and several Career and Technical Education (CTE) subject matter experts, and includes a combination of extensive hands-on exercises and regular quizzes and examinations. In addition to real-world paid training experience working alongside Referees and interacting with consumers, the STTP trains students in the areas of safety, communication, and administration. This additional training helps to ensure that the students learn the essential skills necessary to becoming competent, professional technicians in today’s automotive test and repair industry. The STTP was designed to supplement the BAR required courses, and aid in preparing automotive students to become high performing smog technicians.
